Overview
Since 1998, Sexual Harassment Awareness training has been conducted as
required training for all employees, mandated by university president
Dr. Les Wyatt.
Sexual harassment
is a serious offense on the ASU campus and a policy of “no tolerance”
has been adopted. This policy is in accordance with Federal and State
law, and supports Title VII of the Civil Rights Law of 1964 which
prohibits sexual harassment as a form of sex discrimination. Sexual
harassment is also in violation of the university’s Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action policy. A simple definition of sexual
harassment is “any unwelcome behavior of a sexual
nature.”

Application
The university’s prohibition of any type of sexual harassment applies
to members of the university community, to visitors to the campus and
to others who do business with the university or use its facilities.
The policy prohibiting such behavior applies to sexual harassment
which takes place in any relationship, including both those involving
a power differential and those between peers, colleagues and
co-workers.
Claims
Members of the university community are strongly encouraged to report
any incident they believe to be sexual harassment to the department of
Human Resources within 30 days of the alleged incident. Following this
informal complaint, the department will make an initial investigation
and determine if further information is needed. To view the entire
policy and remedial steps which may be taken, see the
policy booklet, or request a printed copy by calling the
department of Training and Development at 972-2117. The university
assumes a responsibility to investigate all complaints of sexual
harassment with or without permission of the alleged victim.
Resolution
Persons found to be in violation of the university’s policy will be
subject to disciplinary action which may include, but is not limited
to, written warning, demotion, transfer, suspension or dismissal. Any
member of the ASU community who needs further clarification of the
policy should contact the department of Human Resources. |
